Ways to Dress for your First Job
When it comes to dressing for your first 9-5, most of us feel confused about what to wear. The impression you make with how you carry yourself, clothes and accessories inclusive, has more relevance to your growth trajectory than you can imagine. With your new position, looking the part sends out the message that you’re ready to take on the responsibility. Now that this fact has been reinforced, tailoring your outfits and accessories to the job is but essential. So let’s get right into it! Raise your dressing game with these tips.
Scout your surroundings
Begin with assessing the dress code in your office. Is the dress code extremely formal with suits and formal separates being the norm or do casuals work? Does the top management dress starkly different from those on the lower rung? Where do you stand and where do you intend to go? Find that sweet spot and you’ll know what to wear. You want to be able dress right without being loud.
Formal - A suit with pearls and diamonds should do it. Opt for timeless pieces that never go out of style for fail-safe options.
Casual - Play on shapes with unique details but keep the sophistication intact.
Somewhere in between - Get smart with pieces that are equal parts collected, equal parts cool. For instance, a top that borders on casual but is in formal colors works perfect. Chic jewellery that has a twist makes the perfect candidate for this.
Aim for sharp
A general rule of thumb is that you do simple but do it fine. A little effort can go a long way. Some grooming and tiny upgrades will have you spiffed for the position you’re aiming at. For instance, wear a fit that is tailored to you or upgrade to a more sophisticated pair of shoes. If you usually just wear a shirt, amp it up with a jacket.
Keep the number of baubles to a minimum without overlaying because it’s ultimately your work that is going to do the talking and you don’t want what you’re wearing to come in the way. All this while still giving off the right vibes. Either pick a statement piece – it could be a ring or a pendant, or pair subtler jewel pieces in harmony. Studs are perfect. But if you want to consider some danglers, it’s a good idea to limit earrings that don’t go farther than 1/2 inch from your lobe unless it is an office party or luncheon. So is a statement ring and a pendant. Bring out the rose golds, colored stones, and motifs with a slight edge for an instant uplift.
Invest some more
Stash away all the costume jewellery and give your accessories an elegant update with fine jewellery, without going overboard. You are fresh out of college and you have made a switch in apparel but to feel your best, you have to look your best and fine jewellery just does it. Its these little things that polish up the look and set the tone for your success at work.
